The only problem I see is what has been mentioned. Only the resource officers have access. Let's imagine if we will... a disturbance begins at a school... who is going to respond as immediately as possible? The Resource officer, correct? And then... he either gets gunned down, or is engaged in trying to defuse the situation or returning fire, whatever. He gonna break off, run and get his M4 and then return to continue the engagement? I don't think so... Unless there are multiple stored in locations throughout the complex, I doubt having a single rifle available is going to make much difference. Agreed, baby steps is a start, yes. But I think we really do need to get more serious about school security. Maybe we cut a few administrators who really just push paper and sit on their butts all day (I've seen it), drink coffee and schmooze, and put those funds (administrators are paid fairly well, if I recall correctly) toward some real security measures? CCTV, restricted access (I realize some of this is already being implemented alot of places), but more importantly, actual "boots on the ground", trained personel, and encouraging TEACHERS to get training if they want it and are iwlling to keep up with it. It's our kids, folks... if we're not willing to spend the money to protect them from crazy people, since we can't seem to provide the mental health resources necessary to care for mentally ill patients, then what are we willing to spend our money on???? Someone mentioned a volunteer force of parents and community members to help patrol school grounds. I'm all for that. Provided everyone is vetted and has a decent amount of training, I'd sign up in a heartbeat. I'll bring my own weapons and ammo, buy my own gear, vest, etc. Rain or shine, snow, sleet, hail... but it's not politically correct to allow people with guns on school property. Unless they're an LEO. <sigh> It's our damn kids, people.
