Westboro Baptist Church, a Topeka-based group that has gained notoriety for picketing at military funerals, is staging a protest next week in Norman.

The group announced on Twitter that they will picket on Oct. 8 outside the National Weather Center on the University of Oklahoma's research campus. The protest is being held in conjunction with a Society of Environmental Journalists conference. The conference is expected to draw hundreds of journalists, including reporters from The Oklahoman.

OU spokeswoman Catherine Bishop said the protest will be held on a circular drive adjacent to the National Weather Center.

"While the university will be prepared, we do not anticipate any disruption to the academic activities of the university," Bishop said.
