Driving out to Las Vegas and will be there 10 - 15 days. Nevada does not honor OK CCL. So far I've read that open carry is legal and carry in cars is ok with a couple of exceptions.

Can anyone enlighten me to anything that I should be aware of?

I'm planing a trip myself. I will be flying so I have decided to just save the hassle and potential legal problems and rely on my stun gun and cat like reflexes.

a quick read of the Nevada State Rifle and Pistol Associations page regarding the laws, you can;
open carry in Nevada, no concealment or partial concealment allowed (Clark County may have some grandfather clauses)
You can carry a loaded weapon in a car as long as the weapon is not concealed by you or your person (purse, jacket, etc.)

You can also contact the LVPD for information;

Read that as well. Staying at a hotel. I will contact the hotel about their policies.

Wonder how long it takes to get the nonresident permit? I read that the course is only a few hours long and I will have a couple of days free. NV only issues nonresident permits to those that take a course in NV. Have to do some more checking.

NV course is required at initial issue and renewal, and must be shot with the exact gun you are going to carry.

A UT license is the painless way to carry in NV. One time class, $65.25 permit, $10 each 5 years to renew. Fully honored in NV, UT permit is available to any legal resident of the USA. I'm no longer in the UT class business, but instructors are around.

By the way, I wouldn't count on the hotels and casinos allowing you to open carry on their private property. Concealed carry is generally OK.

Yes NV is open carry. yes, casinos/hotels won't care too much for you carrying openly :)

I'm in vegas (looking to move back to tulsa sometime this year), but I don't have my ccw. You could ask on the nevadashooters.com forum though.

If you want to go shooting there are some good ranges and some good desert spots to visit. I personally go to American Shooters. They have two locations. Good people, $10 all day to shoot. range ammo is decent price, indoor, etc.

A bunch of us head to the desert, especially for rifles. If you plan on driving while out here, here is a google map of all the outdoor shooting spots. The Sloan locations are really popular and generally don't require a 4x4 to get to.

I completed the Utah class but procrastinated getting it sent. It appears my primary concern will be storage of firearms when I'm not in my car, which will be most of the time.

If you have a trip 90 days out or so, UT is good, and so is FLA. FLA is honored in NV, same as UT is, more expensive than UT to get and renew, but no new class is required by FLA if you have paper to prove you have had some training. I used my DD214 proof of honorable discharge, proof of another state's hunter safety or CCW class will do. You have to read the FLA law booklet they send you and attest to that on the form.
