I remember one morning driving home after working the hootowl shift dispatch for the sheriff's department. The four-laned divided highway speed had just been changed from 70 to 55 thanks to the gubament. I topped the hill on US 81 doing my usual 70 MPH and met the OHP going the opposite way. as we continued, the hill blocked each other from view but before that happened I saw his brake lights and he was slowing down fast. I recognized him and knew it was Don Hadlock. I immediately pulled over and stopped. It was less than thirty seconds later that trooper came flying over the hill and right past me lights and siren. I could see him tap the brakes, look in his rearview mirror and probably in a sheepish effort to save face, keep going down the highway and around the curve to the right disappearing from view. My turnoff was only a mile down the road and I did 55 MPH all the way. I never saw the trooper again until that evening when I came back to work. I asked if he remembered a white and blue Chevy speeding earlier this morning and stopped just after the hill north of town. "That was you?" Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! (Don's the one that kept sitting on the Undersheriff's desk) Whole nuther story.
