I have had good bosses that reported bad bosses The good boss that comes to mind had left his previous job because the stress contributed to a massive heart attack, and he was nearing retirement age. After several months at the new company, he decided he needed to file for his head rights with the Osage Nation. After learning about the additional income, free health care and other benefits on that trip his attitude changed. Hawaiian shirts were the norm and we talked about putting a margarita machine in the break room. He really started taking good care of his people and standing up to the upper managements BS because he could walk out the door any time. He was also willing to take the time to work through a technical problem in a design and help troubleshoot systems. He was not afraid to admit he was as confused as we were. He was not the type to pretend he knew everything, and we were idiots for not knowing the answer. The boss protecting us was a very was a good thing because the senior man was without question the worst manager I have ever encountered. Seriously, several of his direct reports quit with no job to go to. They just had to get away from him. When senior managers termination was announced it got a standing ovation, and maintenance changed the door locks after he was escorted from the building. I had another boss at a place that was closing down. He was brough in as part of the shutdown team and took the job as a favor to the new ownership, hoping to get a company of his own to run in exchange. It was a large enough place that they had to give us 60 days notice of termination. He gave me my notice, looked at the pictures of my family, and told me that my job assignment for the remainder of my time at work was to find a new job. He offered to review my resume, ignore absences if I was on interviews, and otherwise help me in any way he could. Can't ask for more than that.
