I thought the scope was fubar at first since looking thru it the verticle cross hair was double, well after I put my damn glasses back on and adjusted the focus it cleared right up, so my old ass eyes are the issue. The butler creek scope caps, the rear one was broken off, the front still works, will hit up bushnell about that.
You sound like me shooting my open sight 30-30s and 22s. I can focus on the target and either the front or the back sight but one is going to be fuzzy. I usually go with the Marine Corp advice and concentrate on the front one. That leaves a double mirage image for the back one. Lucky for me I know which one is the fake one and go with the bottom image for the rear. Amazingly I can still can shoot pretty good. 32 years of welding took its toll. I guess I should feel lucky I never lost an eye and can still see or shoot at all at this point.
