Tasting notes: 1) The Elijah Craig 18yr is one smooth bourbon, but with good flavor. A nice compromise of body and drinkability. Nearly as smooth at Blanton's, and $10 less a bottle. 2) The Buffalo Trace has got some bite! Seemed less of a sippin' whiskey, and more of what the cowboys would have slammed back at the saloon! Okay, maybe not that harsh, but definitely was more astringent than the others. This did come with a more robust flavor, with more notes of black pepper and charred oak. An extra splash of water helped, especially as the ice melted then it became more enjoyable. 3) The Rare Breed was the hottest of the weekend, and why not at 108 proof? Was not unlike the Buffalo Trace, but with yet more "spice;" beyond black pepper, almost a hot ginger taste. 4) Deep Discount and Park Hill were out of Jim Beam Rye when my father stopped by, so he picked up some Rebel Yell. Definitely the smoothest of the bunch, in both of our opinions, though I thought this came at the cost of a weakened flavor. Noticeably lighter in color (sure looked like Crown in the glass), the taste was sweet for a bourbon, almost like a Tennessee Whiskey. In fact, it was very much like Gentleman Jack (which I find diluted in taste). When the ice melted, it was very lackluster. But an excellent value for a sipper at $11 a fifth. Oh, and I had some Blanton's at the in-law's. It was quite the whiskey weekend :)
