So we're thinking about buying 30 acres in Canadian Co. East of Stanley Draper Lake. Of course, I was all giddy about the idea of being able to shoot in my own yard! But then I realized it was within the city limits of Oklahoma City. I imagine they have an ordinance against discharging a firearm in the city. I do believe it is zoned agricultural, so that may make it OK. Do any of you know for sure?

I know to make certain I have a good backstop, etc. and there may never be a problem anyway if no neighbors complain, but I just want to know if the lawman did come to visit me, would I be breaking the law?

I'm interested myself. When I was stationed at Ft. Hood, some surrounding cities had ordinances like "if property is ten acres and using a shotgun, hunting allowed in city limits". Wonder what some of the OK regs are.

I think you may mean Cleveland County. (south of 89th street and east of Draper) If you were in Canadian County, you would be in the Yukon area. Oklahoma City does have an ordinance regarding discharging firearms in the city limits. 30-308. You can find it at Okc.gov.

If you can narrow down the area you're talking about, you may not even be in Okc. There are little cut outs on the east side of the city that are considered "no mans land" that are State and County jurisdiction.

Oops, you're right. Sorry. I mean Cleveland Co. According to the Ward map at okc.gov it is in the city limits.
Municipal code 30-308 clearly says no guns can be discharged except shotguns, or at an approved shooting range. I wonder if they'd approve of my home shooting range? :)

My buddy's family owns a 1/2 section on the NE corner of I-40 and Mcloud Rd. There is a live pond, and a pond that is pretty much dead, with a wicked high bank. I started shooting there when I was 15. He probably started when he was 2. We shot there all the time. Then we got old and busy, and only drove out there to shoot every so often.

Most every year, the turtle population is controlled by way of the gun. One year, my now almost 21 year old and I took care of it. I think he was 8 or 9 then. Some years, it is Thomas, other times it is someone else, but it almost is always done.

So several years ago, Thomas brought every gun he owned, and drove his truck down to the live pond, We used to walk, but we have both become lazy. He shot turtles with a 22, then a 17 HMR, then broke out the Norinco AK. He had just finished, and removed his earplugs in time to hear his uncle Mark, who lives there, call on the phone. Mark said to him, "Tommy, the police are here, and they want you to give yourself up peacefully." Thomas laughed, and Mark told him that he was serious, so he put the guns up, and drove up to meet the authorities. There was a Mcloud police woman, a Pott county sheriff, and two tribal police. The Mcloud officer did the talking. Thomas said it went something like this:

McPD: Sir, we got a call that someone was discharging firearms out here. Were you?"

Thomas: Yes ma'am I was. This is my family's land.

McPD: Sir, are you aware of the city ordinance about discharging a firearm within the city limits?

Thomas: I'm sorry. I didn't realize that we were in Mcloud's city limits. When did they annex this area?

McPD: Sir, as far as I am aware, this land has ALWAYS been in Mcloud city limits.

Thomas: Do you mean to tell me that I have been shooting here all of my life, and this is the FIRST time anyone has ever come out?

McPD: Sir, whenever we get a complaint about something like that, we have to come out and check it out. (uses her head to motion to the two tribal officers)

No ticket, they all left. Thomas was livid, but maintained his composure. He talked about finding out what it would take to have a legal, private range, but it never happened. We had dreams of bringing EVERYONE we knew that was a shooter come out at the same time. He has his own land now, near Prague, nowhere near the town's border.

Everything was great 'til the casino came. I hate that casino. It ruined EVERYTHING!!!

A buddy of mine has land on sw 89th between council and county line road. The very SW corner of OKC city limits with Mustang city limits across the road. We went shooting out there once and we could hear distant gunfire in many directions. He said his neighbor is a OKC cop and he shoots out there too.
