I'm a 1911 guy. I tried a few other pistols first with little success.
Had a Beretta 92, then a Ruger P90, then a G21...then shot a 1911 and LOVED it. It fit me, it shot well, it was good looking...it was everything to me. I've been shooting them for the last 6 or so years.
Then I did something. I bought a Browning Hi Power.
I think I'm converting. It almost perfect. It may be perfect. Since I was a 1911 fanboy I was obviously a 45 fanboy. Didnt really care about capacity either as I shot well with it. But taking the Hi Power to the range, I shoot (slowly) as well with the HP as I do the 1911. I can be on target faster with the HP...and keep shooting longer too (double stack, and cheaper ammo). I havent gotten to the point yet of carrying it but I really think I am headed that way. I've enjoyed the HP way more than I thought I would and I had pretty high expectations for it.
(I actually bought two. The blued/wood one is for "originality"..the black/silver is the one I shoot the heck out of and will probably start carrying).

Been there, still there. My 1911's are what I'm most comfortable with. My wife has her own Sig P930 for CC, but she chose to shoot my Kimber Stainless Target II .45 in her class.
The recoil is less than her 9mm and she is much more accurate with it.

I loved 1911s the first time right out of the box and still do. But I have found myself gravitating away and now have a ton of polymer single- and double-stack pistols and carry them almost exclusively. The damn steel-frame of the 1911 is just so damn heavy to carry around. Have to cinch my old fat boy belt so tight it hurts after a couple hours. Concealability is much more difficult, too, at least with my 2 Commander-length 1911s.

I need to take the 1911 and HP to the range at the same outing and shoot both. I've not taken the 1911 out the last few weeks because of the HP. I did 150 rounds through the HP this week and wish I had brought more. It may not be cheaper per outing to shoot because it appears I will shoot it more...but that's not a bad thing.

First outing with my Kimber I did 500 rounds and that wore me out. I don't think 500 out of the HP would be an issue at all.

I have been carrying a full sized 1911 most of the time lately IWB. Noticed I needed 35 waist jeans, nope not usually found, but if I do IWB with the 1911, my jeans fit well for me without being bunched up under my belt. I wore a tool pouch for a lot of years, so I almost forget it is there. I do carry a pocket Sig P238 at times which has all the same functions as a 1911, safety down, mag release, sites, etc. just a smaller size, so it fits naturally also.

Never shot any of the HP's. Might have to see how they fit. Thanks for the info and comments.
