I have to repent for getting into that gun porno! Whew I thought I was reading the gun version of Penthouse letters. LOL I have not read anything that exciting since I read about and then looked at a "Dell" Centerfold in the 90's and lusted for the "Server".

Like others have said, the SOCOM-16, while it does take the same mags, does not have interchangeable parts with other M1As. If you want a short M1A, I'd probably go with the Scout Squad. But let me make another suggestion. If you really like the 16" barrel, check out www.shuffsparkerizing.com and look at his Mini-G. I have one, and it is the nicest rifle I've ever owned. Receiver is forged vs the cast M1A receiver and all but 3 parts are exactly the same as a Garand. Not to mention, surplus 30-06 is about 50 cents per rd from the CMP. If you just have a hard-on for .308, he can build a .308 Mini-G that takes M1A mags, as well. Here's my Mini-G in 30-06...

Now that's the ticket IMO. Sweet sweet concept.

The guy's a certified genius. I have had 0 hiccups out of mine, and it's fairly accurate to boot...2-3 MOA easy. Not bad for a 16" M1 shooting surplus ammo and using irons. I bet I could get it down close to 1-1.5 with good ammo, good glass, and a vise.

I'm not a huge fan of the 16" (it looks too squatty) but that 18" sure does look good! I've wanted a full size M1A since forever, I think they are drop dead sexy! I WILL have one someday :)
