Somewhere in this world there might be a poisonous snake, but all the dangerous snakes around here are venomous. Snakes are great to have around, unless you prefer to have rodents, I leave them alone unless they are venomous and close around the house. Rat snakes are especially good for rodent control. BTW Rat snake are constrictors, they can bite but they squeeze their pray to death. Anyway, all but one venomous snake in OK are Pit Vipers. With a little training on snake ID these snakes are very easy to identify vs non-venomous snakes. As mentioned they have cat eyes hooded eye brows, flat top and triangulated head, their scales have ridges which makes their body color appear more flat than glossy. The other venomus snake is the Coral snake, it belongs to the cobra family, its also very easy to identify by the repeating sequence of color bands (red, yellow, black, yellow, red) the eyes are solid black, rounded pupils and their head is more pointed and rounded. Their scales are smooth giving them a shiny or glossy apperance.
