It’s not in New Mexico, but if you’re going via I-40, the Palo Duro Canyon (southeast of Amarillo) is a pretty cool sight, and I’m told that they put on a pretty show when they’re doing the play Texas. In surprised nobody has mentioned this, but there’s a decent museum at Los Alamos National Lab. When I was there (more than a few years ago), they had full scale models of Fat Man and Little Boy that you could climb on (well, us kids did; not so sure we were supposed to). There were some pretty cool outdoor shops in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, but I couldn’t tell you how to get there (or even if they still exist). Most of the other places were visited were ancient Indian sites, like the Frijole Valley (full of cliff dwellings and a crystal clear stream of cool water running down the middle). Really, I think the view from Tucumcari is worth the trip all by itself...
