I am getting close to getting things together to try out the CDP division in IDPA. Now just to make sure I get it right. 1911 .45 with 8 rd mags= CDP. How many mags can I use on a stage? Also from reading I must have the thumb safety engaged at the start unless otherwise stated for weak hand and such. Last but not least for now any concealment vest suggestions that are not 5.11 or woolrich?

Thanks

If you want to compete for a good score in CDP, you'll want a straight drop kydex OWB holster (i.e. Comp-Tac), a good set of sights that are quick to pick up under most daylight lighting conditions (fiber optic for at least the front sight), a smooth magwell such as a Smith & Alexander, Techwell or Wilson Combat, four 8 round mags (two on the belt in kydex mag pouches, one to load the chamber and one to top off with a full mag) and a decent vest. If you don't like the tactical vests, check here: http://www.competitiveconcealment.com/

or here: http://www.armadilloconcealment.com/

Or just go to Bass Pro and find one you like that's fairly stiff.

Of course all of that isn't necessary to come have a good time. You can see what others are using and check out their gear. Most IDPA shooter are more than willing to share. I loaned Wilson Combat mags, a WC holster and Comp-Tac mag pouches to an OSA'er new to IDPA last weekend. I also have a couple extra vests I could loan. :)

Thanks for the offer. I have been out a few times over the past few years shooting IDPA at Oil Capital and USSA. I just want to give the CDP thing a shot. I usually shoot SSP. Most of the time i use a button up shirt as a cover garment. I have also shot wearing duty gear from work. I really just need to suck it up and find a vest to use :)

EDC often finds me with a Hawaiian print shirt. The Woolrich Elite vests are well worth the bucks. The standard weight one can get a bit toasty if worn continuously during an Oklahoma summer. Thankfully Woolrich makes a light weight version; it comes with a few fewer pockets. Both come in several colors. Hint: go khaki unless you like hot in the sun.

I've seen more than one individual wear a sports jacket as a concealment garment. Looks spiffy and works fine.

I got a somewhat light weight vest from botach about a year or two ago. The brand name was EoTac. It's made out of ripstop instead of the normal heavy cotton. I sweat like a politician in church and it helps a little.

The rip-stop fabric usually weighs less per yard, thus is a better choice for warm weather. As far as a vest selection goes, it needs to fully cover the firearm and gear when the shooter has his arms straight out at 90 degrees from his body. It can have no artificial stiffener panels. Pockets are handy at the level just above the belt line or at it. Things, such as straps on the backside of a vest, that can get caught in a chair are a liability.

The EoTac is now Woolrich Elite Tactical. I have both the light (ripstop) and full cotton canvas versions. I never wear the heavy one in matches anymore, but it doubles nicely as a wearable bugout bag! :D

I hope this will be the last question, since it is Friday and I will be shooting on Sunday. So I currently have 2 Wilson Combat 8rd mags, 1 Wilson Combat 10rd mag, and 1 stock mag 7rd mag. I went out this morning to try and get one more 8rd mag and no luck. My question is can I use a combination of the 10rd mag and 2 8rd mags for a match? My thought is put 9 in the 10rd one and use it as the first mag on all courses of fire. Any thoughts or suggestions.

Oh I forgot I do have another gun to shoot but would be ssp instead of cdp so it is not like I can not shoot, just could not shoot the gun I want.
