It's also a good round for defense, but if I was going that route, I'd buy the ever-loving hell out of surplus 7n6 while you can find it at just over 16¢ a round, and pile up a mountain of spam cans of it. Sooner or later, this stuff will start to dry up, and/or the prices will rise. Remember that the surplus is corrosive, so you have to be diligent about cleaning, whereas most 7.62 today is non-corrosive "animal" brands. Right now, there are mags to be had for the '74, but they can be twice what 7.62x39 mags cost. Buy what you think you'll need, pick up more when you find a deal, and run with it.
Depends. 7.62x39 has plenty of ammo and several ammo choices, magazines are everywhere, and it is a good defense round. The 5.45 is cheap (not as cheap as it was a year or so ago), but limited in supply and variety. Mags are sometimes cheap and plentiful, and sometimes expensive and harder to find.
