So, I need to make two big purchases; a standby generator (NG not gas) and a storm shelter. However, I can only afford to do one this year. Which should I choose? I fully plan on buying both as soon as possible but only one at a time. Here is my thought process, I have a family of 5. Power goes out way more often than houses get leveled by tornadoes. Plus, tornado season is about done for this year. Generator will help protect us from ice, wind, and fires that may cause our rural co-op power to go out. I'm leaning towards the generator. Can anyone change my mind?

Get the generator

I bought a 5500w Generac generator from Home Depot in May 2011 for about $250. Haven't needed it. Haven't needed the cellar that I've had since October 2007 either.

But its insurance.

Almost all of my neighbors have a storm shelter. Very few have a generator.

I have the gen, but no storm shelter. I'm looking for one now, but will use a neighbors if needed.

I bought a small 5500W genset after the big 2007 ice storm. Haven't needed it since.

Me too. I think it has 33 total run hours on it and 28 of those were during that storm in '07.

O/P, you said you could only afford one "this year". Get the generator. Tornado season is over for this year.
