If the SHTF ever happens, most of us will not immediately head for the top of the Rockies. We all feel the pressure of this modern life and the demands that people around us make. We all want to go off and commune with nature and have time to decompress. If you were going in the summer and ensuring that people knew where to search for you if you didn't check in on time we would probably be very supportive. If you were planning a 3-4 day hike, we probably still would. But let's face it, you're 47. Your Ranger days are behind you. You have a family to take care of. You're going at a less than optimal time of the year and you don't want anyone to be able to find you. You can't plan for 2 weeks of good weather and you're not taking a pack animal (your dog doesn't count). All we're doing is suggesting you take a more cautionary approach and consider the potential pitfalls of your hastily planned escape. Everyone occasionally has a devil may care attitude, but most don't immediately take it to the far end of the spectrum. Most of us have wished you well and truly mean it. Just because we think you're semi-suicidal in this venture doesn't mean we're "Talkers". It means we're concerned for your safety and would prefer you consider a more sane approach to your trek. As a former Marine who spent a LOT of time in the high desert and mountainous/cold weather locations, I'm intimately aware of how quickly conditions can turn hostile. I don't know you personally, but I'd prefer that you not be taking a dirt nap within the next 2-3 weeks. JMO, YMMV
