I was on the 13th floor of a major hotel just outside of Washington DC. The fire alarm went off about midnight and I could smell a faint smoke order. The power was also out and the alarm was very faint. I started knocking on all the doors and then went to the stairwell, but the emergency lights were not on. It turned out to be the building power transformer that went out. After the fire department was through I went up the the fire captain and told him about he problems with the emergency lights and the low volume of the fire alarm. He was not very happy and told me they would be out the next day for a full fire inspection. They also required the hotel to have an employ on each floor for a fire watch before anyone could go back in.
