I just found my old iphone 3 in my safe. I gave it to my daughter and she is thrilled. Problem is it wont allow me to update the software to anything newer than 4.2.1 so none of the apps in the store will download or work properly.

How can I get her some games? Can I jailbreak it?

Yep its only a 3 and not the 3gs. If I cant get any apps I guess she can use the camera and music player.

Its frustrating. Im glad I made the move to the galaxy s3

Use the browser and go to jailbreakme.com on the iphone itself. If it can be jailbroken through the browser that site should do it.

Then set it up with the Hackulous repository and grab Installous from Cydia. Once you're done there, use Installous to grab older versions of games that should be compatible.

Cydia is not compatible with the iphone 3g. There is an alternate, but it cautions serial numbers after xx134 to not attempt it. It aaid it will turn your phone into a paperweight. Maybe I shoild just get her a new ipod

my iphone 3g (not 3gs)is jailbroke & has cydia on it. been working fine for many years.

be aware that cydia is just an alternative app store with a good supply of open source software, morally good. installous on the other hand, is a conduit to free versions of normally paid for apps, morally and legally corrupt. be aware of that should you choose to use it.

if you prefer there is an alternative that will let you run up to date apps. you'll need to jailbreak the 3g & use cydia to convert the firmware to android os... but it'll open up the application possibilities for you.
