They are supposed to redact stuff like social security numbers and other things and it's been this way for some time now. I still see them all the time though even today. Different counties have their own methods, some actually try to redact them even though it's a gargantuan task, others just don't let you make copies unless they redact the stuff from the copies, while others won't let you make your own copies at all, while others just won't let you copy the military records. I've seen just about every kind of record a county courthouse can have in the trash cans towards the end of the day. From the Treasurers office, commissioners meeting minutes, you name it. When the law came down about taking military records out of public view some counties in Texas (maybe all, I don't remember) closed ALL of the records to the public while they went book to book redacting. As soon as one book was done it was put back in public access. It was extremely frustrating and there were some really pissed off people over the deal. Bottom line is it all depends on the staffing and budgets of that particular county. It varies greatly. Go out to the courthouse in Arapaho and then go down to Atoka county. The courthouses are night and day different and so is their ability to do certain things.
