Same here. I use several different stone's from Arkansas two sided stone's, to Jap water stone's. fine grit paper, and polish. All my blade's shave.

Do stones sharpen knives better than the kits you can buy in stores?
All depends on who's hands the knife is in.
I use the same equipment. Made my money back many times over by sharpening at gun shows and motorcycle rallies. Retired now and just sharpen for friends and myself.
I did them by hand for many years. Then, at one of the gun shows I run across this baby! a little pricey just to sharpen knives, but well worth it for me.
I never have somebody else sharpen my knives. I have a natural feel for the stone, that preserves the angle of the blade that I like.
Lately I've been using a Smith's sharpener (quick & easy), then polish the edge with a leather strop and compound.
