On Wednesday Rep. Rob Bishop (R-Utah) introduced the ‘Lawful Purpose and Self Defense Act,’ H.R. 2710, which is probably the biggest piece of pro-gun legislation introduced in the past 30 years. It replaces the National Firearms Act’s “sporting purposes” language with “lawful purpose,” a move that will remove the ATF’s ability to arbitrarily reclassify rifle rounds as “armor piercing” and will ensure that shotguns and large caliber rifles aren’t labeled “explosive devices.” - See more at: http://www.alloutdoor.com/2015/06/1...jor-pro-gun-reform-bill/#sthash.NIqC4B2d.dpuf

His proposal seems fine now and so did ITAR until it gets twisted to be used against the 1st and 2d Amendments. Always consider the unintended consequence and bureaucratic tendencies for bad outcomes.

This. Remember, in many places, self defense is not a "lawful purpose."

Personally I get nervous every single time any level of government starts talking about enacting anything. I would be more than happy if they spent much more of their time repealing laws that already exist than enacting new ones.

Be nice if the proposed bill also stipulated that self defense is a lawful purpose.

If it can be written in with a bill, it can be written out just as easily. I feel much more secure with a SCOTUS ruling saying it is, and an explicit Amendment would make me happier yet.
