It's not the breed that's the problem, it's the behavior, which goes back to its training. If you put a Pomeranian in a feral pack, it's going to be just as bad as the other members; if you train a pit bull to be a lap dog, it's not going to be a danger to anyone. I've never shot a dog, but I have put a round in the dirt to discourage some bad behavior on a few occasions. The most recent happened when a dog (most likely an escapee from one of the $$$$ rural neighborhoods near my place) was on my back porch barking most aggressively at my cats. Now, I don't want to shoot some kid's beloved pet, but I have those cats hired to keep the vermin away from my house, and I don't particularly want them to be in danger (the cars and coyotes are quite enough, thanks), so I told him to GTFO. At that point, he commenced to barking at me, so I put a rather expensive Cor-Bon .38Spl JHP in the dirt a few feet to his rear quarter, and I've not seen him since--but make no mistake: the next bullet had his name on it. I don't want to shoot a dog, but I will if I need to; I won't lose any sleep over it, but I damn well won't be bragging about it, either.
