I have used the CFL's when I couldn't find Incandescents, and I despise them. They put out half the light that incandescents do (TO MY EYES) and I have yet to see proof that they actually last any longer than incandescents (IN MY EXPERIENCE). Granted, I stopped keeping logs of light bulbs replaced when I stopped being an Electrician's Mate in the Navy, but I have had to change them in houses I rented for less than a year, after installing them myself earlier that year. I hate to think that some of the arguments above are emphasizing that you should have the right part for the right piece of equipment when we're discussing a light bulb. . .This isn't an engine, a nuclear reactor, a lower parts kit for an AR. . .this is a friggin light bulb. Something mom, dad, the blond putting a McD's order in at the library, and your grandma with alzheimers is buying at the store. They're not going to go home and say "Oh dang, this light bulb complies only with SubSection C of the Attic Lighting Code. . ." As far as mercury in fluorescents and proper disposal goes, I revert to the dad, mom, blondie, and mental granny statement above. They're not going out of their way to find a fluorescent bulb disposal location, which we couldn't even find while I was in the Navy, disposing of hundreds of bulbs at a time. They're going straight into the dump with everything else. Crash, shatter, mercury released. And before anyone says I offended them, I'm a blond who had a grandma with Alzheimers, as well as a mom and dad!
