Long term storage of .22 ammo.........what's your method?

Milsurp ammo cans work well. The biggest concern would be to keep the ammo cool and dry; extreme swings in humidity and temperature (such as storage in an unheated garage) probably wouldn't do the ammo any favors.

I don't think the cold is a problem as much as the humidity is.
I have milsurp ammo that is easily 40 years old and it still goes bang.

Like said above, ammo cans, IN THE HOUSE for controlled humidity.

If the green milsurp ammo cans are airtight and watertight, how is external humidity a problem?

There's still humidity inside the cans, unless you add desiccant before closing the lids. And seals will fail given enough time.
