Because we know her.
My wife and I really don't do much for any of the BS holidays...the cool part of that is we do stuff for each other every time we get the opportunity all year round.
Ditto that... my birthday is just another day. Don't give a damn. My wife has had to remind me several times it's my birthday, I wish it would pass without acknowledgement from every person in my life - of COURSE, though, people feel a need to make a big deal of it, and if you want to forget it, they feel a need to make a BIGGER deal of it.
Almost like it's about THEM getting acknowledgement for pushing you to celebrate or something...
I used to work with a woman who was a Jehovah's witness. They do not celebrate birthdays at all. But every year I would tell her that I acknowledge she was one year older on this day.
My wife and I do Christmas and anniversary presents, the rest of the year is just "I thought of you" presents. She usually asks what part was I thinking about.

My wife and I rarely to anything for each other's birthdays, other than to wish each other a happy one. We figure that because we are buying stuff at different times of the year, we'll state that "this is for birthday and anniversary." In my case, it is generally camera equipment, and hers varies. In the past, it has been electronic devices like laptops, tablets, phones and such or at one period of time, embroidery machines.
More than once in our past, she has called me up and sang Happy Birthday to herself. Gets me just about every year.
I never had my birthday acknowledged as a child and I certainly don't care if it is recognized now. It's just another day and I wnat no celebration, just tell me good morning and get on with the day. I buy the wife birthday gifts all year long so she isn't too concerned if I don't get her one on her day.
