I have killed several deer with an '03 Springfield which I don't have anymore. And I can't tell u how many I have killed with my 303 British.

I just got a scope put on one of my ol' Mosin Nagants 91/30, and I am enjoying shooting it very much, and plan on taking out a deer or three with it.

I had a mosin 91/30 for hunting for many years. I had the PU side mount but with a weaver rail instead of the rings for the PU scope. It was a fun rifle but i sold it. I have another 91/30 and i plan on using the PE or PEM mount on this one.

I'm surprised milsurps enjoy this much popularity for hunting purposes. There's hope yet :D

You bet!
Whether it's 30-06, 8mm, 7.62 x 54, .308, .303 etc, they all shoot a comparable round.
Lotsa' affordable scope mounts that allow you to remove the rear sight of a milsurp without having to permanently alter the barrel or receiver.

How do those of you who hunt with Mosin Nagants deal with the safety? I theorize that Russian soldiers never used it.

When I was using one for hunting I kept the chamber empty until time to fire. This was a nuisance, but unless you are Conan the Babarian, the safety is impossibly hard to use. I have met a few MN shooters who literally didn't know it was there. . .

There is a mod which puts a wire loop on the aft end of the bolt. You can find these on the internet or make them yourself. Bolt parts are a dime a dozen, so the original can be preserved if you want to.

This link mentions a Timney trigger with safety that would solve the problem:

This link has a good picture. Haven't taken the time to find any for sale

I quit using my sniper for hunting because it was so long and clumsy. The white wrapping got a few looks . . . :)

I think my Mosin might be fine without the safety on because it has a 20lb trigger pull!

I once saw a 91/30 where the owner had welded a steel ring onto the face of the safety, a la the Swiss K31. That probably helped.

I find it hard to believe that people have so much trouble with the safety on a mosin. I even decock it on a round and just cock it when ready to fire.
