"Instead of subsidizing more police officers, we need to help schools hire more counselors, more nurses, more mental health practitioners"... "students of color are often unfairly targeted and disciplined by police in schools"... "black girls are four times more likely to be arrested than white girls. This is not simply an inequity, this is a crisis in and of itself,"... Most of us here were probably raised with the belief that if you don't want to get into trouble, then you don't do things that will get you into trouble. Maybe I'm just an old fart but it's not "more counselors, more nurses, more mental health practitioners" that are needed in our schools - it's more parents that are willing to discipline their kids for screwing-up. I'm not advocating for 'beating' kids, but the judicial use of a belt on occasion, can carry a lot of influence. Obviously the 'never hit a child' mantra that many hold onto, hasn't seemed to work very well over the long term. Maybe it's time to go back to a more tried and true way of raising our kids.
