I had one that was great around the family but had what the vet called "self resepect". It wouldn't let anyone mess with it. They had a note in his file at the vet that only I could hold it during shots testing ect. They tried... once and it ended up with an unconsious tech and another that narrowly missed having the side of her face torn off. When I held him he would wag his tail while they were taking blood and giving him his shots. He also lashed out at a kid that ran around a corner and jumped on him. The kid got a few stitches and a lesson about dogs. He was great with the family but did have "self respect" as the vet called it. I would say that it varies from dog to dog, but your chances are high of finding a lab that is more tolerant than most dogs.
