I am also a garand shooter and somewhat curious what purpose you have in mind for a straight pull bolt
First of all - brass retention. I spend a lot of time prepping the brass - no reason to loose it, bounce it off the concrete or dent it.
Second - I have found a very accurate reduced load that has enough power just to barely bump the rod, jamming the brass between the bolt and barrel.

The easiest (but not the cheapest) solution would be to buy a Schuster adjustable gas plug and run it open. They cost around $30 from Midway if I remember correctly.
