This thread is kinda like the thread a while back about the show of disrespect during the national anthem and the pledge of allegiance. I still don't understand why we hold these pledges, sings, and strips of cloth in so high a regard. The Flag Code wasn't committed to law until 1942, during the height of the war production. Like the pledge and song, the honoring of the flag is a recent patriotic invention. I personally connect them with FDR's socialist and nationalistic policies. We revere our flag like the Communists did. Except it is OK to revere a strip of cloth because it ours and "good" and a symbol of freedom. (And no, I am not a sovereign citizen). I honestly think all this patriotic business created in the last century was to weaken our distrust in the state and promote a kind of patriotic collectivism. So it doesn't inflame me or make me angry that Obama's campaign did that. I just find it weird. It is likely a cheap trick trying to play off the same patriotic symbol invented so many years ago. And the headline of the linked article is ridiculous.
