Homeowner shot, killed in overnight home invasion Posted: 12/18/2010 TULSA - Police continue to hunt for suspects after a man is shot and killed in his own driveway early Saturday. It happened just after 3 a.m. Saturday morning at home in south Tulsa near 61st and Memorial Drive. Neighbor, James Gunnells says he's shocked something so violent could happen just across the street. "About 3 a.m. this morning my daughter said, 'Dad, we heard gunshots outside', so I went out the the front door to see what was happening and I could see Jerry laying there on the pavement," said Gunnells. Gunnells ran out to help, but it was too late, Jerry VanEllen was dead. Police say two suspects broke into the 38-year-old's south Tulsa home, held his family at gunpoint, and then took off with two cell phones, an Ipod and laptop. Suspect one is described as a black male 6 foot to 6 foot 3 inches tall, thin build, wearing a black hoodie, black pants, a dark bandanna covering face and was armed with a revolver, Officer Leland Ashley said with the Tulsa Police Department. Suspect two is described as a 5 foot 4 inches to 5 foot 7 inches tall, thin build, wearing a black hoodie, black pants, a dark bandanna covering face and was armed with a knife, Ashley said. "No reason for anybody to do anything to them it was just a random case of murder," said Gunnells. Vanellen was home with his wife and two young children. His visiting brother woke up in the living room to a gun pointed in his face. Family members say the suspects had broken in through the garage and stabbed the family dog. When two men left, VanEllen chased after them. That's when police say one them fired that deadly shot at VanEllen. "His family is going to miss him greatly," said Gunnells, "yesterday was the youngest boy's first birthday, and his dad got killed." So far no arrests have been made and police are asking anyone who may have information about the suspects to please call Crime Stoppers, at 596-COPS.
