Been a long couple of weeks. It was time to remove the pool. It hasn’t been opened in 4 years because we are on the road every summer. Started Easter weekend by renting an excavator with a concrete breaker to start demolition of the concrete around the pool and a patio adjacent to it. Turned into one heck of a challenge. When I pour concrete it’s there to stay forever. 6” thick with 3/8” rebar on 12” centers. It sure doesn’t crack! There were no visible cracks after 31 years. Swapped the concrete breaker out for a 24” bucket and dug a hole in the middle of the pool to bury all the concrete in. Spent two days and change moving the concrete into the hole. Then there was the stainless steel inside wall to get rid of. The excavator didn’t have the cahunas to bend or tear it out as it was buried in a concrete footing with stainless dead man anchors to hold things in place. Built a redneck oxy/acetylene air arc rig to blow out the stainless as it was being cut. Took a couple days and lots of gas to get that done. Today, enlisted the help of a buddy with a front loader to help me move dirt from a donated pile to the old pool site. After moving over 90 tons of dirt in a dump trailer, we have a semi finished back yard now. After letting it settle for about a year, a new stone outdoor kitchen and rec area is going where the old pool was located. Sprinkler on the area now to facilitate the settling.
