Preppers weapon of choice ?

Well, you can start with just one gun, and then use it to "upgrade" your armory. I'll start with a .22

Not my first gun, but the first gun I ever bought was the BL-22. Awesome lil rifle and still the favorite gun I have. (Oh, well, at last it was when I still had guns before selling or losing all of them, I don't have any now.)

For a Peppers (sustenance) Weapon of Choice, I went with a Savage 22LR/20ga over/under. Im considering adding a 30-30 rifled insert to round it out. I think that would cover all the bases.

Depends on the situation/circumstances. Not one weapon is great at everything.

Battle Rifle: AR/AK
Pistol: Glock 19
Shotgun: Remington 870
Long range: Remington 700
Small Game: Ruger 10/22

If I HAD to choose 1 and only 1, it would be my AR.

+1 on all these...however....I do believe that 2 of everything is best practice...you might consider substituting a Mossberg 930 sox for the remington 870 if you have extra cash....its a semi auto with an 18 inch barrel, will load 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells, cycles everything from 00 buckshot to birdshot and costs about $800!
