I owed about $196,000 between Federal and private loans when I came out of law school. Everytime I hit a a decent case, I'd pay it down. By the time I got part of my fees on my Fen Phen cases, I had it down to about $130,000. I bought a cashiers check and FEDEXed the whole $130,000 to them. When my online account should them all paid, I let out a rebel yell that scared my staff. Frigging indentured servitude was over. I was lucky enough to have mine paid off within 7 years of graduating, but most folks can't do that. I definitely believe that if the government is good enough to loan you the money to invest in yourself, you should be good enough to pay it back, but it should not be at 8-10%. In fact, if we can give billions to the Israelis, Saudis, and various other countries in the world, why can't we provide support to our own citizens to improve their educations?
