If you can afford to let the debt owed to you go uncollected, then do so. If it's become a burden to you and your family because of the absence of that money, then take the legal steps to get it back. Every "negative/unwanted" situation in life can make you better, or bitter. If you end up bitter, that will continue to effect you and your family and usually only sets the trend for further troubles.
