I had about a 4x4 piece of drywall replaced in my kitchen ceiling while I was away. It has already been repainted. The texture of the patch is much rougher than the texture of the original. It looks like crap and unfortunately I need to fix it myself. Can the rougher texture be sanded somehow until it resembles the original or would it be easier to apply another coat of joint compound and smooth it out a little more. I'll have to repaint the entire kitchen ceiling in any case. Thanks

It can be sanded down, but with paint on it, it'll be a PITA. You won't be out anything but a few minutes of trying and some sandpaper for giving it a shot, though. If you skip the sanding and just recoat because you're trying to match a rough patch to smooth surroundings, you're going to need a BIG patch of recoat to make it look right.

Latex paint, because of its rubbery nature won't really sand. You're on the right track about doing what's called a skim coat. But if you want the patch to be invisible, you will have to skim coat the entire ceiling, sand, then texture and paint. If you're not good with texture, you can get some PVA primer, thicken it with mud, then roll a orange peel texture on the whole ceiling, then paint. There is a whole lot to a good drywall job. Good drywall work is a thing of art, few people can appreciate it, except a pro.

Sometimes if it is a knockdown texture and a thin coat of paint was used and the peaks are what need knocked down you can take a trowel and run it like a push blade and knock down the texture.
You do not get sanding scratches that way either.
Trowels are cupped so use the correct side.
