I would trust the pencil method over the hammer test.You can also do a drop test on a concrete floor if it rings it is fairly hard, a thud means dead soft.hardness accuracy.Take a look on line at the "cabintree hardness tester", I have one and it works great.If we were closer we could get together so you could use mine.
