If you have a hydraulic press or some other way of putting the same pressure on the lead, make a point or attach a ball for the press, and put 200 pounds of pressure on the lead. You can then measure the diameter of the hole in the lead to figure out what hardness you have, provided you have a known pure and a known hard sample.That will be much more accurate than hitting it with a hammer.
