Was looking at taking a Remington 700 that is chambered in 7mm Remington Mag and rebarreling it to a 458 Lott. I know the Bolt face is the same for both calibers (.532") But here's the questions i have that i hope someone can answer. Whats the pressures produced by both of these and will the 458 eject okay from the action? 458 Lott Case Length is 2.8" and the COL is 3.6" im not seeing any trouble since the action will eject a loaded 7mm(3.29") but will it eject a loaded 458 Lott? Past that the only thing i see is the magizine box may need to be lengthend and extended to hold 4 rounds as seen on many Safari/ABG style rifles.

Thanks

I've always prefered the Model 70 in a safari caliber vs the 700. Maybe it's the romance of the Mauser style action. You can load the Lott to .458 Win Mag velocities and it will have lower pressure due to the larger case volume. That's probably not a real issue for most people, but it supposedly was in the heat of Africa. I doubt I'll ever find out, but it's fun to think about the "golden age" of African safaris. I'm sure it's a lot different now.

I was thinking the same thing, its a classic icon a Winchester 70 in africa chamberings. I might even pair it with a Winchester 1895 in 405 Win in a custom made tweed and leather 2-gun Safari luggage style case for the pair.

I believe the 700 will handle a bit longer cartridge than the 70. I know you can use the 700 for .375 H&H, and those are 3.6 inches long overall. If I am not mistaken, the 70 standard long action is some shorter and won't take that much length. I recently "boarded" a 70 .375, and compared it to my .338 Win Mag model 70. The bigger gun's receiver was noticably longer.

The Lott makes a lot of pressure, no pun intended. Everything must be just right when you are getting anywhere near design limits on receivers. I would be more comfortable using something stronger, and unfortunately, quite a bit more expensive. CB
