I have a Remington 722 chambered in 308. It has a bit of mystery to it because 308 wasn't introduced until 1952 and the barrel is date stamped as best I can tell AXX that is March 1951. The mystery might be I am reading it wrong but if that's the case so are several gunsmiths and dealers I have asked.

Anyway the gun is in good shape while it has clearly been in the field it has also been well maintained through its life. The rifle functions perfectly. The scope is zeroed but is nothing special. $600 OBO

Like when I was learning in a blacksmith shop, I was told that perfection is Gods but aspiration is mans.

I feel in order to get this new cartridge to market in the 1952 year manufacturers would need to tool up and begin building before the release.
You can bet some testing was done before the release.

I researched serial numbers and found the same thing you see happened to one guy with a 222 Remington.
Stamped date indicated the rifle was built before it was "released" for sale.

All these internet links and books that state when something was put into production could be just copy catting each other.
That is my take on it.

@swampratt that is kinda what I figured or they had to run production for product launch. It is still interesting and probably indicates this was an original first run rifle in 308 and thst is cooler still.
