This is an interesting video on reclaiming a dead lead acid battery by converting it from lead acid to lead alkaline. He first drains the battery of its electrolyte (sulphuric acid) neutralizes it by washing out with bakeing soda and water, then making a new alkaline electrolyte from powdered alum and water. I might try that with one of my dead batteries I have laying around. Its a little long, but interesting anyway.

Since this is a wet cell system, it appears that he does recharge it. I have an old battery that is a good candidate for this, I'll keep you posted on results. Jim
