Has anyone used a Resume service? If so what was the cost? I have been a maintenance supervisor for the last 10 years and a maint tech 10 years before that so there are a lot of things to consider when making a resume. I am thinking I would like to have a service prepare one for me with my info. Any ideas would help.
Thanks
John

I personally wouldn't pay a service. There are lots of free templates on-line as well as Microsoft Office Word. It lays everything out and you basically fill in the blanks. I have also just finished a class on Portfolio Development and learned a lot about resume's. If you like, send me some info and I would be more than happy to help! I can send you a copy of my resume as an example as well. Just hit me up if you want.

I agree with grizzly ... plenty of templates out there that you can use ... if you are looking for someone to proof read and "clean it up" (which, if you think about it is all a resume company does for you) just PM me ... I'll be glad to help ...

ETA: I should read all of the posts before I respond ... LOL ... but dang, what fun would that be!

The resume service mills are not worth a dime. They don't know you and they don't know your field. They make lots of claims, none of which they can back up. You're better off finding someone who knows how to write a resume that knows you and get their help. Even the templates grizz mentioned are better than getting ripped off.

What she said.

You can also PM me as well if you like. I've taken a few resume writing classes myself. Boring stuff.

Don't use the most generic templates, like what is available on word. Also, don't pay for a service as it is a waste of money when good info is out there available to anyone for free.

I personally like the resume advice that TheLadders.com has available. I believe you have to sign up (for free) to access their articles, but there is good stuff in there.

Use the templates and be sure to list "accomplishments" at every job you ever worked, and have friends or people who are managers or high level supervisors critique your resume. Also, every time you submit a resume change the wording so it fits, as well as possible, the job description they are requesting and write a cover letter that fits the job description and state why you would be a good candidate for the job they are describing.

Thanks for the advise. They want $100-$300. seems high to me. I have written a couple from MSword and got the job(years ago) but I dout it was because of my resume writting skills.

Great point! Describe why you are the best canidate but start the letter about how you found the position available. Make sure to state some information about their company to show you have done research and are interested in the company. End the letter by reiforcing how you are the right fit and how you are looking forward to the interview, thanking them for the chance, and your contact information as well. It should be three paragraphs long, each paragraph around 5 sentences. First, how you found it, info about the company, and excitement about the interview. Second, describe why you are the right one and prior accomplishments. Third, reinforce you are the right fit, looking forward to interview, and contact info. At the bottom left hand corner, put down that "resume included" or something to that affect.

Never pay for a resume service. Ever. You can spend an hour online reading and know as much if not more than anyone working for the service. You also have the advantage of knowing yourself and the job.

As mentioned above. Make each resume you submit appear to be the only one prepared and it is specific to that job you are applying. Typing up one resume and changing only the first sentence isn't a good idea. will usually result in the round file.

Accomplishments you have made is a good point. I have a word file in my resume folder on the computer that is nothing but accomplishments and milestones of my current job. Programs I have designed and implimented, Processes I have streamlined, etc. Its a lot like bragging with purpose.
