For home defense, I would not chamber a round for two reasons.

1) If there are kids around it is safer without one in the chamber.
2) Nothing scares the crap out of somebody like the sound of a pump action being worked in the dead of night.

An example, years ago I lived out in the country in a house with hardwood floors. One night I woke up to the sound of my front door being jimmied and opened, and the sound of someone walking on the hardwood. Grabbing the 12ga I kept by the bed I jacked one in and immediately heard someone running like mad to get out of the house.

I keep a round chambered for three reasons.

1. No kids
2. If BG is already in the house I would rather not give away my position with the racking.
3. 1 extra round

I don't for three reasons....

1)No kids
2) If BG is already in the house I would rather rack the slide.I've never heard of a BG coming towards the sound of a racking shotgun.
3)If I need more than 8 rounds of 12 ga.on an intruder in my house, the zombies must be storming the gates.

I voted empty. The odds are greater for me to have an accidental discharge for whatever reason than to have an intruder. I'm willing to give up what little time it takes to rack the slide for that. If I do have an intruder, he will see the muzzle flash about the same time he hears the slide racking.
