Has anyone here ever compared the weight of their optics, namely scopes? I am buying a lightweight rifle, and am wondering how much weight I might add on with a scope. I've never picked optics due to weight, so mainly looking for opinions on lighter weight scopes, or if its even worth worrying about? No long range shooting involved, so won't need a huge scope...TIA

Light weight is good if you plan on walking a long ways.
I have toted 12 lb rifles for hundreds of yards and it gets old.
Most of my rifles with a scope fall in the 7.75-10.5 lb area.

I have had light scopes that the clarity and ghosting or haze over was bad.
I pulled those off my hunting rifles and have Nikon or Redfield on them.
Vortex Crossfire II will glare as will cheaper Bushnell scopes or newer Tasco.

My Redfields are heavy but i do shoot farther distances.
My old Colorado made Redfield 4X was a great scope and plenty for 250 yards on deer or milk jugs.

Today I like more power even at 250 yards.
Not needed but I like it.
I like clarity the most though and if you gave me a high power scope that glares vs a low power with great image quality i will take the image quality.

I have always stuck with lightest possible scopes on my light rifles, not needing long range precision but instead both eyes open fast aiming and better low light vision than my eyes, so use my three (recently discontinued) Leupold 2.5x Ultralights at 6ozs on my rifles, which with lightest ringmounts at circa 3ozs, adds essentially 1/2lb to my rifles. They have exit pupils far larger than any eye can dilate, and so give all the low light vision I can use plus gobs of forgiving eye relief. Most scopes run 12-16ozs bare, many today far heavier with the Mount Polomar optics bought by many, and that is not counting mounting. I do without as much as possible as I like light/handy over most anything, as heavy ends up not being used, stays home, and a total waste of money.
