I did it. Dont have 39a any more . This is 9422M 16.50 barrel. Gun was really ratty when I got it.

I wouldn't chop a nice one, but if a refinish is part of the deal anyway, I'd say go for it. Sounds like a neat project! Post some pics.

There's a member on here that specializes in shortening and threading barrels, and he'll even relocate the front sight and shorten the tube too. And his prices are great...

Many years ago I shortened a Marlin 39 a into what is called a bicycle rifle. Marlin made a short 39a and it came with a bag that took the broken down rifle and it mounted on the frame rail. Yes, before you ask, we did the paperwork for an SBR. Look them up, kind of a cool little gun, but the real ones are very rare!!!
