When I saw this thread last week, I had to get Dad's 50's something Winchester '94 30-30 from the safe and look it over. First rifle I ever took deer hunting. Later took Dad's Marlin .357 lever gun - my brother has that one. I sucked at deer hunting and never killed one with either rifle. Too impatient.

Dad if you read this thread - your guns are safe and accounted for.

It is down right un-American NOT to own at least one lever action rifle chambered in .30-30. I've only got 2.
I haven't bought any factory .30-30 in quite a few years. I cast my own bullets and have managed a few one hole groups.
I prefer the Lyman 311041 mold which casts a flat point gas check bullet that from my alloy comes in at 180gr with GC and lubed. My best results have been with W748 pushing it to about 20000fps.
I've also had fairly decent results with the Lee 150 gr FPGC but the Lyman mold is easier to cast a good bullet with.
With either slug a fun plinking load is 10 gr Unique.
I've also heard of people making a light load using a .311 round ball.
