The driver shortage is real. A part of the problem is pay. Starting pay is not much more today than what I was making 20 years ago, as a driver. Not many are willing to put the time in required to have a decent income. Another big part of the lack of drivers is INSURANCE COMPANIES. My grandson wants to drive. He couldn't get a job with training included. I paid for a driving school. He couldn't get a job, because company INSURANCE requires 6 months - 2 years experience. He went on harvest, drove truck LOADED WITH A COMBINE from here to Canada and back. Made 2 trips riding in pickup to Wyoming and driving equipment back. While on harvest, drove grain hauler. Gets 6 months in. Companies will not hire, INSURANCE doesn't recognize farm work as experience. How many others WANT to work, but aren't allowed? IF his name was Kunta Kinte Rodriquez, he had no DL, spoke no English and would work for half pay, he would be on the road before dark.
