In all my years of reloading steel I have never heard of someone making their own shot. I've been loading steel since the Government challenged us to do so. It wouldn't be fair to say that you can load 'em cheaper than buying them, although you can't buy what I load. I just loaded up a few boxes of duplex loads 4's over 6's and 2's over 4's running about 1470 fps with blue dot and Federal 2 3/4 " hulls those are very consistent loads to kill 'am out to about 40 yards with a 95 % pattern out of my Benelli 28" with factory chokes. My go to later in season loads are 3" Remmington hulls and Alliant Steel powder that run about 1720 fps and will consistently kill 'em out to 60 yards and pattern about 92% out of the same gun and choke. I use Reloading Specialties Super Sam Shot and pay about $9.00 a box to reload although, I purchased these components many years ago, so I assume the price per box has risen since then. The national average is 7 shots per duck and I average about 2.5 shots per duck with my reloads. So, with all that being said it is cheaper for me to reload these as these fit my needs. I did spend quite a bit of time to get the correct loads to pattern so well out of the gun I shoot.
