This is SO VERY TRUE. What's sad is that a lot of OSA members don't get this. It started with Robertson and Falwell and the Moral Majority and it has ended with Obama. Until the Republican Party membership can break the stranglehold that the Religious Right has on it, the country will continue its slide. I am a Christian, and although I'm a "little rough around the edges," I believe very strongly in Jesus Christ. As a Christian, my wish is that everyone would know the saving grace of Christ. As an American, I realize that many of my fellow countrymen do not share my beliefs. I respect the teachings of Jesus, particularly when He said, "Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's..." I take that to mean we should respect the law of the land. That law, embodied in our Constitution and Bill of Rights, provides for the separation of church and state. Unfortunately, the Republican Party membership has allowed religious extremists to co-opt the message of personal responsibility, small government, and adherence to our founding principles. These extremists are actually damaging our country by excluding moderates and non-Christians, driving these folks to the Democratic Party. These extremist bear a great deal of responsibility for the secularization of America. They are, in part, responsible for the very thing they fear and hate. The future if our country is at stake. If the Republican Party doesn't get it together soon, it's over. Those of us in the "fly over states" will continue to be frustrated as we watch our country and our rights dissolve into grotesque caricature of a self-loathing liberal's wet dream.
