You can do some pretty good stuff to the original stocks. Glass bedding can be helpful. Not trying to suggest you keep anything original, but I have seen some Mausers really benefit from bedding.

Also, the amount of torque on the bolts that hold stock to action can affect accuracy. One of my sporterized Mausers is sensitive to this, but the several others don't seem to care. My 25-06, which is a Yugo 98 in a Hogue stock, likes for the bolts (screws) to be just snug, but not too snug. Opens 100 yard groups form 1/2" to 3/4" if I get 'em too tight.
